The national Handball trophy ever won by Jaffna was brought home by under 15 school players of Chullipuram Victoria College on Friday (06) amidst warm welcome of military and education authorities. A felicitation ceremony had been organized by the Security Forces Jaffna (SF-J) at the Civil Affairs and Public Relations Office Jaffna on their arrival with guidance of Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe.

Army first hosted them with lunch at the Gurunagar Ceynor jetty and later extended warm welcome at the Civil Affairs Office. Members of the Victorious Victoria Handball team was garlanded by soldiers serving in Jaffna before a ceremony organized by the SF-J to encourage those little sports stars commenced.

Handball was introduced to Jaffna schools by the coaches of Sri Lanka Army Handball Association (SLABA) with guidance of Lieutenant Colonel Raja Gunasekara, Vice President of Sri Lanka Hand Ball Federation and Sri Lanka Army Handball Association during a training programme conducted three weeks ago for a crowd of selected students in the peninsula. This victory gained within a shorter period of training is the result of dedication of Lance Corporal H.M.A.S. Senevirathne and Private B.D. Dhananjaya of SLABA who trained Jaffna schoolboys to win this national school Handball Trophy. Interest shown by students and the principals of those schools was an incentive to Army coaches to lead them towards victory.

A large number of schools from the south took part in the competition held at Buddhadasa grounds at Sri Jayawardhanepura on the 4th and 5th July. Vaddukkoddai Jaffna College and Jaffna Central College, which participated in the competition, also proceeded up to the second round.

General Officer Commanding 51 Division Brigadier Piyal Wickramarathne delivered a speech appreciating the success of Jaffna boys. He also commended the assistance given by Major Raveendra Jayasinghe, Commanding Officer of the 11th Sri Lanka Light Infantry of Karainagar and his troops. Security Forces Jaffna arranged free transport and meals for the three teams.

Zonal Director of Education Valikamam Mr. S. Kailasanatha, principal of Victoria College Mr. Sri Kantha, teachers and Army officers attended the function.
