“Good Bye Margosa Tree”

[2012-07-25 12:34:16]

Nearly 45 small children who were reading their first letters amidst immense hardships due to absence of a pre-school building in the village were blessed with a spacious and beautiful hall where they can comfortably continue with pre-school learning, thanks to the Army personnel serving in Nagarkovil area.

The teacher and children used to gather under a big Margosa tree to have their pre-school even amidst adverse weather conditions for many months.

Commander 551 Brigade Brigadier Hemantha Kulathunge who learnt about the situation discussed with the Commanding Officer 10th Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment Major Upul Sathurusinghe who employed his troops to build a suitable and attractive building for children of Kalaimagal Pre-School using local resources found in the area.

It was declared open and handed over to the teacher and students by the General Officer Commanding 55 Division Brigadier Ajith Wijesinghe on 20th July at a small function attended by Rev. Fr. R. Jesuratnam of Champianpattu St. Philip Nary’s Church, principals of nearby schools and officials of Vadamarachchi East Divisional Secretariat.

Books, pencils and other school items were gifted to students by the Army.

Nagarkovil East is a recently resettled remote area in Vadamarachchi after demining was completed by the Army Engineer troops and foreign demining agencies.
