55 Division Organizes Soccer Tournament for Vadamarachchi Youths

Uduththurai in Vadamarachchi East, once hit with fear of artillery and mortars fall posing an ugly picture of morose life due to overwhelming terrorist activities has now been able to provide civilians there with a peaceful environment for a revitalized life. People in this area, majority fishermen, are now leading a normal life continuing with their livelihood, education and sports activities.

Soccer is the most popular sport played by the youths during their leisure in the grounds by the side of the sea. With view to promoting the sport and encouraging the soccer players in the 55 Division area, Headquarters 55 Division organized an Interclub Soccer Tournament recently at which energetic youth in Vadamarachchi area, who play with minimum facilities, showed their talents. Preliminary rounds of the tournament commenced in last week of September with the participation of 11 sports clubs out of which Aliyavalai Arunothya and Uduththurai Bharathi were qualified for the finals played on Friday (05 October) at Uduththurai Senthamil grounds.

At the final whistle, each side had scored 2 goals. However, with penalties played subsequently, score board displayed 5-2, and Arunothya SC of Aliyavalai was adjudged the champions. Twenty seven year old national player Muththukuamr Nagulesvaram of Aliyavalai who won a President’s award for his talents in 2010 also played for the Arunothya.

Each member of the wining team and the runners up was given a valuable mobile phone by the 55 Division. In addition, “Hype” Energy Drink Company gave 12 T shirts to the champions, 05 T shirts to umpires and trophies for the winners and the runners up. Headquarters 55 Division gave footballs to all teams that took part in the tournament. The Sri Lanka Army Artillery Brass Band conducted a Band Display during the interlude for the entertainment of general public.

Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe graced the occasion as Chief Guest on the invitation of Brigadier B.H.M.A. Wijesinghe, General Officer Commanding – 55 Division.

Rev. Fr. K. Jesurathnam and Rev. Fr. K. Justin of Pilivaneri Church Champianpaththu, Rev. Satheeswara Kurukkal of Pallai Amman Kovil, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 55 Division Brigadier Ajith Wijesinghe, General Officer Commanding 52 Division Brigadier Anura Sudhasinghe, General Officer Commanding 51 Division Brigadier Chandana Gunawardana, Divisional Secretary Maruthankerny Mr. S. Thirilinganathan, Divisional Secretary Pachchilappallai Mr. S. Sathyaseelan, Manager Hype Energy Drink Company Mr. Asanka Wijekoon and a large crowd witnessed the final match.

This area was resettled during the first phase in 2010 and Sri Lanka Army in support of government reconciliation process conduct multidimensional activities wining hearts & minds of people.
