Jaffna Grade 5 Scholarship Winners Felicitated

In appreciation of performance shown at the Grade 5 Scholarship examination 2012, Security Forces Jaffna (SF-J) organized a felicitation ceremony to award a group of Grade 5 students who achieved successful results at the examination.

On directives of Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Civil Affairs and Public Relations Office Jaffna organized this felicitation ceremony for the second consecutive year.

Out of 8937 candidates who appeared the examination from the Jaffna District, 1027 have achieved sufficient marks to win scholarships. Headquarters SF-J, with assistance of the Jaffna Education Department, selected the first 26 students and awarded them with valuable gifts at the ceremony held on Wednesday, October 31 morning at Civil Affairs and Public Relations Office on the Hospital Road.

Each student was given a parcel of gift worth over Rs. 4000 including a school bag, a small travelling bag, an umbrella, a dictionary and a pack of school items. In addition, the student who became the first in the District was given a passbook with a deposit of Rs. 10,000/=. In the same way, three students who scored equal marks to win the second place were given passbooks with deposit of Rs. 5000/= each while Rs. 2500/= worth passbooks were handed over to 22 other scholarship winners by the Chief Guest Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe and other invited distinguished guests.

During his speech, SF-J Commander stressed that our future lies on the younger generation and they must be proud of it and do well in their studies. He made a special note on the Late national heroes like Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan who worked hand in hand with Sinhalese and Muslim community leaders to win independence for the country and great Tamil intellectuals such as Dr. Luxman Kathirgamar and Dr. Neelam Thiruchelvam, assassinated by the LTTE. Taking those Tamil leaders as examples, he said that cast, race or religion of a person is immaterial when bringing honour to the country.

Mr. P. Vigneswaran, Deputy Secretary Ministry of Education-Northern Province, in his vote of thanks reminded that since 1996 Sri Lanka Army has been helping to improve standard of education in Jaffna, and under the tenure of present SF-J Commander, Jaffna Education Department was able to reopen 7 schools from Vasavilan to Keeramalai after he took actions to release those areas from the then High Security Zone. Mr. Vigneswaran also admired Army’s assistance extended to restart all schools in Vadamaratchi area after resettlement was completed.

Government Agent Jaffna Mr. Suntharam Arumainayagam, Mayoress Jaffna Mrs. Yogeswari Pathgunarasa and a senior Jaffna citizen Mr. Iswara Sarma Sabarathne, addressing the gathering thanked the Army for its contribution towards improvement of education in Jaffna.

Balendran Abiram of Jaffna Hindu Primary School who became the first in the Jaffna District in Grade 5 Scholarship Examination 2012 volunteered to speak a few words on behalf all scholarship winners and thanked the Army for organizing a felicitation ceremony to encourage them.

Private business firms in Jaffna including Sampath Bank, Indian Bank, Dialog Axiata PLC, Mobitel (Pvt) Ltd., Raja Cream House, Jaffna Fashion House, Yarl Fancy Mahal, Aseer Vaniga Nilaiyam, Ayankaran Stores, Mathi Colour Printers and Chamber of Commerce, and donors Mr. A. Aruljothi and Mr. Sri Kantharaja sponsored the donation.

Teachers, students, parents, senior Army officers of the SF-J and well wishers were present on the occasion.
