the 55 Division of the Security Force Headquarters, Jaffna organized
their Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration at the Public Ground
in Iyakachchi on 21st April 2017.
Brigadier Aruna Muhandiram, General Officer Commanding 55 Division,
graced the event as the Chief Guest. Brigade Commanders, senior
military officers, state officials in Iyakachchi and Senior Police
Officers also participated in the event.
Lighting of the traditional oil lamp signaled the traditional
commencement of the day's event. This festival which was an attempt
to further promote harmony and peaceful co-existence among all
communities in the Iyakachchi area included a variety of both
traditional and modern games, with fun-making events. Bun Eating,
the Best Laugh, Fancy Dress Competition, Musical Chairs, Slow
Cycling, Tug-o-war, Pillow-Fighting, Marathon Races, Hurdle Runs,
Eye Spotting, Smashing the Pot by the Blind, Gunny Bag Races,
Climbing the Greasy Pole, Guessing the Papaya Seeds.etc, coloured
the day's event.
A musical show also was staged to add Tamil, Hindi and different
other melodies into the air to bring fun and amusement to the
occasion. A large gathering of civilians, Officers and Other Ranks
of the 55 Division participated in the event.
Finally, the Chief Guest and other invitees gave away prizes and
gifts to the winners.
