Vesak Celebrations in Jaffna

Buddhists all over the world are celebrate the thrice-blessed Day marking the Birth, Attaining Enlighten and Parinirwana of the Lord Buddha. The most significant day of the year in the Buddhist calendar which falls on 10th May. Security Force Jaffna - SF (J) organized a grand Vesak festival for all communities in Jaffna in the close proximity of public library from 10th to 15th May 2017. The Jaffna Vesak Festival - 2017 themed "Yapa Patunai Daham Amavai" inaugurated on Wednesday (10th May) presents a range of religious creations related to Vesak.

The first day of the Vesak Zone was declared open by Mr. N. Vethanayahan, District Secretary Jaffna, as the Chief Guest of the day. A massive crowd thronged the venue on the very first day to see the splendor of hundreds of illuminated creations and exhibition of colourful and innovative Vesak Lanterns. Soldiers of all battalions based in Jaffna contributed making different events to the Vesak Zone.

Prior to the opening of the Vesak Zone, Commander SF (J) Major General Darshana Hettiarachchi and all ranks attend a Bodhi Pooja Pinkama at Headquarters Security Force (Jaffna).

The giant Vesak Pandol lit with 20,000 electric bulbs using modern technology attracted the spectators. The Vesak Pandol depicts "Anda Butha Jathakaya". The exhibition will continue for seven days till 15th May. This Pandol was organized by troops of 511 Brigade and built by Mr. Asanka Udaya Nayangith. Meanwhile, over 5000 enjoyed free vegetarian dinner at the Dansala organized by the Army.
Another significant feature of the festival is presentation of devotional songs (Vesak Bhakthi Gee) sung in Tamil and Sinhala by children of Nawatkkuli Maha Vidyalaya and Male and Female soldiers.

Sri Lanka Police based in Jaffna, philanthropists and business community assisted the Army in making this grand festival a success. Jaffna Municipal Council and a number of government and private institutions cooperated with the Security Force Jaffna in this genuine effort of Jaffna soldiers which definitely espouse religious co-existence and mutual relationship between the North and the South.

Religious leaders, Commander Security Force (Jaffna) Major General Darshana Hettiarachchi, senior military Officers, senior Police Officers and the invited distinguished guests were present for the Vesak Zone.
