milestone was achieved on 30 June 2017 with the official handover
of upgrading health facilities in Velanai Rural Hospital and Chankanai
Divisionala Hospital in Jaffna with the assistance of troops of
Security Force Jaffna.
This project placed emphasis on development initiatives
to improve the quality of life for conflict affected returnee
communities, particularly in the North. Resettled communities
have undergone significant challenges associated with lack of
suitable infrastructure, in particular in the health sector. The
support provided by Sri Lanka Army contributed greatly to lessen
some of these challenges, which in turn contributed to enhance
the living standards of the civil community.
The project was carried out by the Security Force
Headquarters, Jaffna, under the guidance of itís commander, Major
General Darshana Hettiarachchi, with the blessings of Lieutenant
General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army. This gigantic
project costs 6.8 million rupees. The upgrading offer required
accommodation facilities for the Medical Officers to ensure round
the clock availability of medical assistance to the innocent people
in Velani and Chankanai.
The 5 Corps
of Engineer Services Regiment has provided the technical and instrumental
assistance while troops of 18 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment and 2 Sri
Lanka Light Infantry Regiment provided work assistance and toiled
day and night to bring the project to fruition. This project was
completed within a record span of seven months from the inaugural
cornerstone-laid on 30 November 2016 in line with the government's
reconciliation efforts. This state-of-the-art civil-military joint
effort, a mirror that reflects growing interactive cordial relations
and sentiments of reconciliation.
